The Penzias & Wilson observation was cleverly usurped into the exclusive service of Big Bang Cosmology in a backroom deal in Princeton, when in fact the observation could have had other, better physics-based explanations. The Princeton Group, led by Robert Dicke, made a deal with the AT&T Group (Penzias & Wilson) to publish back-to-back papers by the two groups. Basically, the Princeton Group described the prediction of Big Bang Cosmology, and the AT&T Group described their certain fulfilment of that prediction. Thus everyone else was booted out. The message was: This Merger & Acquisition is a done deal! Stay out!
Penzias & Wilson would later get to cash in their M&A "shares" for Swedish kronor.
Such was the blatant scamming that went down - with the scientific community applauding (Read: SEC approval). Alternative explanations of the AT&T observation were later offered, but the scientific community chose to ignore them.
The Big Bang Blackbody of Smoot & Mather (NASA COBE Satellite) was outright fraud.
Herbert Gush did not observe a Cosmic Blackbody.
Nobody observed a Cosmic Blackbody.
The 2011 Nobel Prize was given for an alleged discovery within the framework of the now fully discredited Big Bang Cosmology. Further, in making this award, the Physics Nobel Committee indicated that they stand ready to anoint the Dark Energy idea next.
This is a very dark development in progress in sciencedom that people need to wake up to.

George Smoot expended a great deal of time, resources and manpower developing corrugated horn antennas with special properties (E and H plane beam equalization) that were quite unnecessary for his experiment. In the process, he got so distracted that he made a fatal error. These antennas did not have enough collecting aperture, so that his sky observations were buried in the noise. His sky map was a marginal blur, if that. The whole experiment was a mindless waste.

The public got the impression that the calibrator and the sky measurements cancelled perfectly, leading to null spectrum and hence the charmed blackbody curve (with error bars smaller than the theory line!). The reality was very different. Mather and Co. could not get a null. Then they started blaming this thing and that thing on the satellite for the failure to null. Then they started tweaking things. Eventually, some kind of tortured null was got. This would not pass a Ph. D. Thesis Committee. The real reason is obvious – the calibrator science was misconceived; and of course there is no blackbody in the sky. When the satellite could not get a null, that was one good piece of information it provided.

How the WMAP Satellite learned lessons from the COBE Satellite
The moon always held the clue to the COBE failure!

How the WMAP people learned lessons from COBE, but neither group ever admitted the COBE failure in direct language. Instead that let the results they evidently knew to be bogus proceed to the Nobel Prize. Some researchers were common to both programs.

For some ten years after the first report of the discovery in 1990, and for years after the satellite went kaput, Mather & Co. continued to publish impressive-looking papers with figures, equations, math, hi-tech jargon... All the while, the reported accuracy of measurement continued to increase, eventually yielding the tell-tale value of 50 ppm. NASA junk science begat more NASA junk science. These papers represent a grievous destruction of our great trees.

Throughout the program, repeatedly, repeatedly, the scientific instruments gave Mather the message that things were not working. Repeatedly, repeatedly, Mather got out of this with some clever twist. Eventually he ended up with his discovery - none the wiser.
