There is a prayer song by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore which says something like this:

O Lord, The Cosmic Song you have composed in the Dhrubapada raga;
I will harmonize my life song to that tune.

One might actually conceive of a Great Cosmic Sitar!

If you move from songdom to physicsdom, that is.

Sorry, any music enthusiasts who have arrived at this page!

This is about physics.

THE PRESENT VIEW OF PHYSICS

In the present view of physics, the magnetic field lines of the Earth in empty space are imaginary lines that help us assess what the strength and the direction of the field at any point is. Otherwise, the lines do not represent any kind of reality or continuity – as does a clothesline for example. Therefore, it is meaningless to speak of any empty space phenomenon that exploits such reality and continuity.

Strummable?

Secondly, even if such continuity existed, there is the difficulty of creating a disturbance in the field line (similar to plucking or strumming a stringed instrument such as a sitar). In the present view of physics there is something called the superposition principle. It says that if you locally create a magnetic field in order to “strum” the Earth’s field lines, this local magnetic field does nothing physically to the Earth’s field – but only creates the impression that the planetary field has been distorted locally. The two fields are completely independent. The overall “distorted” field line picture is obtained by adding one field to the other.

MY NEW VIEW

This present view of physics is incomplete on both counts – as I have reported elsewhere. First, magnetic field in empty space has a reality (A NEW VIEW OF MAGNETIC FIELD). Second, the two fields above do interact (BEYOND ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES). Thus, one can discuss a strumming effect within the new physics.

Imagine you have placed a current loop in the Earth’s magnetic field B. The axis of the loop is parallel to B. The loop produces a dipole-like magnetic field b. Then the overall picture is this: The Earth'’ magnetic field are parallel lines. The loop creates a bubble-like region where the overall field lines (B + b) bulge out and/or are bunched together. At sufficient distances from the loop, the overall field lines are again parallel lines – no disturbance there.

Suppose now that the current in the loop oscillates at a frequency f such that the loop remains a non-radiating magnetic loop (i.e. no electromagnetic waves are emitted). In conventional physics, the shape of magnetic field lines will periodically vary within the bubble, but the distant field will remain undisturbed.

In the new picture, the disturbance will propagate to the distant regions as ripples in the overall field lines.

Thus, for example, this effect can be used for telecommunication.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE COMMUNICATION AND THE NEW IDEA?

Since the loop is non-radiating, no electromagnetic wave is generated or propagated. What is propagated is electromagnetic energy that is generated by the battery that powers the loop. This propagation occurs upon utilizing the Earth’s field B. In absence of this field, there would be no propagation from the loop. The propagation is a companion wave.

HOW DOES STRUMMING WORK – PHYSICSWISE?

First, let us try to understand this in a simple way within the new physics, with some imagery.

Magnetic field in empty space - I have shown – is an actual thing: a mass. Its magnitude is proportional to B**2. Therefore, the stronger the magnetic field is within a given volume, the greater the mass within that volume. What does this say? It says that the medium is compressible, like the atmosphere. So, if you generate a pressure pulse at a point (as you are effectively doing with the magnetic loop), pressure waves will spread out to infinity. In our case, it is the Earth’s magnetic field that serves the role of the “atmosphere”.

The detailed physics is TransMaxwellian Electromagnetic Theory – which you may read here. There, many experimental considerations for verifying this type of phenomena are also discussed.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE GREAT COSMIC SITAR?

The implications of the Earth’s magnetic field being capable of being strummed are enormous – and may be both beneficial and harmful to mankind. I leave you to ponder this comment. Remember, the strumming does not have to be man-made. And just as the strings of a sitar lose tension after a while, so may the Earth’s magnetic field become weakened.

This idea of strumming was first reported by me in my 1992 paper.
